Painter Laura Jenkins is Featured Artist for
MSG’s May/June Exhibition
Main Street Gallery is delighted to showcase the works of local painter Laura Jenkins for its spring show, titled “Sunrise to Sunset… and a few things in between”.
Raised on Maryland’s Eastern Shore Laura has a love of the area’s natural beauty which is clearly evident in her work. She says she draws deep inspiration for her oil paintings from the “region’s quiet marshes, open skies and dramatic sunsets”.
Although the Berlin, MD artist is self-taught, she says she has been surrounded by art for as long as she can remember as both of her parents were artists and she comes from a long line of artists from her Dutch heritage. While her background allowed her to develop an early appreciation for creative expression she believes that the ability to create art is not genetic but comes from a combination of curiosity, discipline and a genuine love of painting. That belief she says has led her to a lifelong commitment to observation and practice in pursuit of her own personal voice.
Painting out of doors, or “en plein air” where she works to capture the shifting light and atmosphere of her subject, is a special joy for Laura. She often uses those direct nature studies as the foundation for a more refined painting when she’s back in her studio. “This process allows me to preserve the immediacy of emotion of the landscape while bringing depth and finish to each completed work.”
Sunrise to Sunset…and a few things in between” will open at the Gallery at 518 Poplar St. in Cambridge on May 1 and run through June 28. Laura will be showing her paintings alongside the work of the Gallery’s member artists.
