JACK KNIGHT

“Although my wall constructions exude a spirit of playfulness and fun I find that
making them is contemplative and visually imagined”

Delaware artist Jack Knight was born in Welland, Ontario, Canada and grew up in western New York. He earned a BS in Art Education and NY State Teaching Certification from Buffalo State College (1972) and an MFA in Painting from SUNY@Buffalo (1976). Jack was an Adjunct teacher at Niagara County Community College and Empire State College/SUNY until relocating to Massachusetts. Jack became a member of the Kingston Gallery in Boston and had a solo exhibit in 1983 including a favorable review in the Boston Globe. Years later, while resuming adjunct teaching in New Jersey, Jack became a member of the 3rd Street Gallery in Philadelphia with a solo exhibit in 1998. In 2003 he was a visiting artist at the National Academy of Design in New York.

Jack also had a long career in the railroad industry but always found time to create. In 2010 he retired and became a full-time studio artist. “These assemblages contain many diverse elements from painted canvases to buttons, balls, even a plastic fork. They are put together on the floor then assembled on a wooden frame to make the final piece. The series reads from top to bottom and I work in sections and then assemble it as one work of art.”

Jack has received numerous awards in the arts including the 2021 Established Artist Fellowship in Sculpture from the Delaware Division of the Arts. His work is in several private and corporate collections including the Bank of Boston. He has had over 200 exhibits including 20 solo shows.
