ELLIE LUDVIGSEN

My view is that art, at its simplest and most complex, is a universal form of communication that breaks down differences, provides openings, allows stories to be told, and forges healing. It is contemplative, challenging, fascinating, frustrating and a never ending learning process.

My foray into photography started when I was given a Brownie camera at age 7. Being an undiagnosed dyslexic,  photography helped me make sense of my visual chaos. Through taking thousands of bad photographs, good formal classes, teeth-shattering feedback, and teaching others, I have grown – and still take my share of bad photos!. I photoshop nothing.  I incorporated art into my work throughout my life. With a master’s degree in public administration and forensic psychology, I worked in NYC in criminal justice for over 20 years. I found that using visual arts with gang kids, hardcore offenders, victims, CEO’s and staff was the ultimate tool to help behavior changer. Although I am mostly a generalist photographer, my favorite type of photography is street photography – taking raw and un-posed  glimpses into people being people, with their knowledge. I also love using black and white to show pattern and form when color might distract. I have shown work in galleries in  Colorado, NYC, NJ. In 1995, I returned to Colorado to help my mother die with dignity; in 2017, I returned to the East Coast to be closer to my grandson,  and am loving living in Cambridge.
