Robert Sullivan
Robert Sullivan is a documentary, landscape, and portrait photographer, with a passion for night photography, including the night sky. His photographs have won many awards and have been displayed in numerous galleries and museums. He also teaches, tutors, and runs workshops dedicated to helping photographers develop new skills and enhance their creativity. He also judges camera club competitions. Robert’s documentary subjects include the Arabbers (horse and wagon vendors) of Baltimore, and the life and death of the Lonaconing Silk Mill in western Maryland. His workshops feature a very popular series of night photography workshops, which have expanded to include 24-hour and multi-day workshops at a variety of locations. Both the Maryland Photography Alliance and the Dorchester Center for the Arts (Cambridge, MD) are sponsors of his work.
A photograph doesn’t succeed because of some fancy technique or the latest and greatest equipment. It succeeds because it was well seen. Seeing can be practiced even without a camera. Some photos are taken on the fly, and others are the result of careful planning: mapping out the location of the sun, moon or milky way in relation to a particular subject. And light can transform a person or a landscape, and it’s that transformation that I seek to capture in my photographs. Finally, I like photographs that tell a story. The emotion in a picture is as important - if not more important - than any other element.
