“After moving to Easton in 1980 I continued to do sculptural work with glass and wood before focusing on wood sculpture alone.”
DAVID STEVENS
While living in Los Angeles, David learned to do stained glass and worked in a studio there for a year after which he opened his own studio. For the next 9 years David worked in stained glass, but also started doing woodwork, making furniture and combining stained glass with woodwork to make hanging sculptures.
After moving to Easton in 1980 David continued to do sculptural work with glass and wood before focusing on wood sculpture alone. He studied the human form in life drawing forums and created three dimensional sculptures depicting dancing, reclining, or standing figures.
Next, David began using wood in a more two-dimensional way to create hanging sculptures which were collages of images. They were organized around themes that were quite diverse. Some focused on widely used cultural symbols, others were organized around a theme for which he created the symbols. These two-dimensional hangings held David’s interest for some time, but after a while he branched off into abstract designs using layers of wood with a variety of veneers to depict interacting forms.
Starting in 2000, David worked primarily in photography for a number of years before returning to woodworking.
